Members of Inspiration – October 2019

Name: Jamie Elliott
Age: 41
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 4 ½-ish years

How you got started at CFSC: When Chuck and I lived in NY I had been doing CrossFit for a little over 4 years. Chuck had tried a few different boxes when he moved here and had decided that he liked CFSC the most, so when I was finally able to move to NC with him it was natural that I came here too.

Favorite CrossFit movement: Hang power cleans and box jumps. I really enjoy endurance workouts especially when they have variations of movement. Also Tire Flips, I LOVE tire flips. We should do more of those.

Least favorite CrossFit movement: It tends to rotate. I like a movement until I just don’t. I would say at the moment barbell thrusters. There is so much potential to drop it onto my own head.

Favorite healthy food/meal: I like to eat all the things. I love roasted broccoli and spicy sweet potato hash. I also really like almond butter. This list could go on and on. I like to cook when I have the time, and like I said above I really like to eat.

Favorite part about CFSC: The people. When Chuck and I first moved here we didn’t know anyone. I still remember my first Saturday workout at this gym and being casually invited to come to breakfast after. It was a little thing but it meant a lot. I have met some of my best friends and “family” through the interactions at this gym.

Something we don’t know about you:
I’m Batman!    ….ok I’m not.

I really have a love/hate relationship with running. CrossFit and the people who I have met there are what made me start running. I’m a social runner, I don’t care about my time at all and if you run with me, I will talk at you the almost the whole time. I love seeing my friends run farther and faster than they ever thought that they could.

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Don’t be afraid to come in and try it. Everything can be modified or scaled to your abilities. It’s always amazing to see how far people change and grow while doing CrossFit. You will also meet some of the most encouraging people ever. We all cheer each other on and hold each other up. Even if you decide that it’s not for you, that’s ok. You may just meet a few new friends.

Name: Chuck Elliott
Age: 40
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 5 years

How you got started at CFSC: Jamie & I did Crossfit in upstate NY and when we moved here I was told I had to find a good box with a great community. I tried some of the other gyms around, but CFSC was my favorite. The space was large, people were nice, the equipment was in good shape, and it was close to my job.

Favorite CrossFit movement: Power Cleans.

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Overhead squats.

Favorite healthy food/meal: BBQ from my smoker. I really enjoy smoking and eating brisket. It is also fun to share it with all the wonderful friends I’ve met here.

Favorite part about CFSC: The SkiERGS? Well maybe not, the people are the best part. I have made some awesome friends here. It makes going to work out so much more fun when you enjoy the company of the people that are there working out with you.

Something we don’t know about you: Even though I now enjoy running the longer distances, I was a sprinter in high school and hated any distance over 400m. It wasn’t until my 30’s when Jamie signed us up for a 5k that I got into running the longer distances. I enjoy how a long run can really clear your head.

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Have fun, scale/modify as needed, don’t skip reps, and it doesn’t matter if you are the first one done or the last. There will always be movements that you will be good at and movements you won’t be good at (or possibly even hate) but that is part of the fun of Crossfit.
