Members of Inspiration – December 2019

Name: Chad Farmer
Age: 28
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 1 year and 5 months

How you got started at CFSC: I felt a huge void after sports. Was not able to compete, or strive to be my best self. An old friend suggested I try CrossFit. I tried one another gym first and HATED it (spent 5 minutes there). I immediately felt at home with CFSC

Favorite CrossFit movement: Anything where I can pick up a barbell.

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Anything that requires me to pick myself up (Lookin’ at you, “Rig”).

Favorite healthy food/meal: Uh… (>Insert Buffy’s suggestion<)

Favorite part about CFSC: I love that a group of people from all walks of life can get together to try to be the best version of ourselves.

Something we don’t know about you: To be a strong guy, I am surprisingly flexible. I had 4 years of Yoga practice prior to CFSC.

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Burpees suck no matter how long you have been at it!

Name: Samantha Barber
Age: 31
How long you have been a member at CFSC: I joined June of 2018, so almost 1.5

years.

How you got started at CFSC: I joined Crossfit after my mom started going to a

gym in Cornelius, NC and inspired me to try it. I started going to Crossfit Rock Hill

but then moved to CFSC after I started working in Steele Creek. Now I work in

Matthews but never found another gym I liked better, so I make the drive to CFSC a

few times a week, and it’s totally worth it.

Favorite CrossFit movement: rowing and box jumps (basically two things that are

easier for taller people…unfair advantage, but I’ll take it).

Least favorite CrossFit movement: hand stand push-ups! I still can’t do them and

feel like anything that requires mostly upper body strength is not my forte.

Favorite healthy food/meal: Salmon, but I don’t cook it nearly as much as I’d like.

I am definitely not motivated to cook so we normally do homemade taco salad or

eggs with chicken sausage for dinner. I wish I was more into cooking but it just

isn’t my thing.

Favorite part about CFSC: So many things! I’d have to say the people first;

coaches, peers, everyone. I always have a good time, even when I’m suffering

during a workout.

Something we don’t know about you: My family use to own a few alpacas and I

would show them. It was fun for a little bit but I’m not sure the show life is the life

for me. I still love alpacas though!

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it:

Don’t take yourself too seriously. You have to be willing to try new things and fail, and

then try again. Everyone has tripped on a jump rope, or skinned their shin on a

box jump, or missed a lift. Trying new or difficult things in front of other people can

be scary but it can also be really inspiring when you are all trying to get better

together. I remember that I finally got double unders my third year of crossfit

(after a lot of whipping myself with the rope). It felt like I would never get it, and

then finally it clicked. Keep going, keep pushing yourself, keeping trying new

things. There are so many things I can do now that I couldn’t do even one year

ago.
