August 2017- Members of Inspiration

Name: Mandy Piercy
Age: 39
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 2 years, 8 mos.
How you got started at CFSC: While teaching, I needed a physical outlet so I joined a local boxing gym. From there, I moved onto a bootcamp and finally decided I was ready for the next step.  I was scared to death but joining CFSC was one of the best decisions I ever made.
Favorite CrossFit movement: Rope climbs….now that I have figured out how to safely descend.
Least favorite CrossFit movement: Overhead squats
Favorite healthy food/meal: chocolate avocado pudding
Favorite part about CFSC: First, I love that the workouts are planned for us every day.  Getting a great workout (from coaches that I trust) without having to put forth any thought is awesome and there’s never a chance to get bored.  Secondly, the sense of community truly can’t be matched.  If I’m ever last, people are there to cheer me on until my very last rep.  Many of these people have become like family to me!
Something we don’t know about you: Because I’ve had amazing mentors in my life, I’m a “big sister” with Big Brothers Big Sisters.  It’s one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever had.
Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: If you think you’re “not ready” for Crossfit because it’s scary or intimidating, come in to observe a class and chat with people.  Many times, we assume that Crossfitters have always been in shape and athletic but that’s not always the case.  Some of us were NEVER athletic and are still a work in progress.  😉  Every workout can be modified so don’t avoid one that appears to be too hard or out of reach for you.

Name: Andy Walker
Age: 29
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 1 Year
How you got started at CFSC: I was getting tired and winded walking up a few flight of stairs. Some friends from college were doing CrossFit and loving it. I figured if they could not only do it, but also enjoy it, I could too!
Favorite CrossFit movement: Rope Climbs
Least favorite CrossFit movement: Slam Balls
Favorite healthy food/meal: Grilled chicken, roasted mixed veggies, and brown rice.
Favorite part about CFSC: The people. What I have learned from the coaches and experienced members has been invaluable. From technique advice, to encouragement during an off day, they all blend together to make CFSC a place I leave with a smile no matter how poor my mood was when I walked in the door.
Something we don’t know about you: Most people have learned I went to Clemson University, not many know I was also in their marching band.
Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Just do it! Show up for class, get in the gym, be engaged, and sociable. Work hard, but also scale appropriately. If it takes 3 days out of the gym to recover, modify down a little more. Listen to the coaches, if you’re not sure seek one out and ask. Fitness is available to everyone, but you do have to work for it.
