May 2017- Member’s of Inspiration

Melissa & Rachel
Name: Melissa Daniel
Age:
35
How long you have been a member at CFSC:
almost 3 years
How you got started at CFSC: I had just moved to Charlotte.  I tried a box by our old apartment and I hated it!  I almost gave up CrossFit all together.  I decided to try one more box that was halfway between our apartment and work.  The morning I started at CFSC things were instantly different.  Every single person introduced themselves to me and made me feel so comfortable.  I knew I had the made the right decision.
Favorite CrossFit movement: cleans and push jerks
Least favorite CrossFit movement: snatches and overhead squats
Favorite healthy food/meal: Balsamic chicken salad with quinoa
Favorite part about CFSC: I know everyone says this but honestly it is the people, including the coaches.  Everyone is so welcoming and supportive.  It doesn’t matter what your fitness goals are, someone will be cheering for you.  I can’t say enough about the coaches.  They are always there to answer questions, help you modify, help with technique, or just lend an ear to listen to you.  It really is a great place to be! If I am 8 months pregnant and willing to get up at 4:25 am (even on my days off) to come workout; you know this place has to be good!!
Something we don’t know about you:  I was an All American swimmer in college. I broke the joint in middle finger 3 weeks before nationals my junior year.  I missed what probably would have been my best meet ever.  I had a bone graph and pins that stuck out of my finger for 6 weeks and months of occupational therapy.  I came back my senior year but didn’t do as well as I wanted. My finger is still disfigured today.
What is even more interesting is I have touched all 5 Backstreet boys!!  Nick Carter even dripped sweat on me!!!
Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Go in with an open mind.  It can be very intimidating walking in but just give it a chance; you will love it!  Crossfit has changed my life both physically and mentally.  I always say Crossfit is my form of therapy; I go crazy without it! Give it a try- you’ll be amazed what it can do for you!!

Name: Rachel Dorr
Age: 33
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 1 year and 4 months
How you got started at CFSC: I started with the Couch to CrossFit program last January at 7am on Saturday mornings. I decided I needed to make a change to how I was working out. Angela and Charles had been talking about it for several years so I figured I would give it a try. After one week I knew I wanted to join and that this was a unique atmosphere.
Favorite CrossFit movement: Deadlifts for sure!

Least favorite CrossFit movement:
Lunges and Overhead Squats

Favorite healthy food/meal:
Cilantro lime chicken with spicy avocado sauce (let me know if you want the recipe!)

Favorite part about CFSC:
There are so many things I love about this place so I will try to narrow it down. The people here are some of the kindest and most fun people I’ve met. Our coaches are AMAZING. Thank you so much for modifying workouts for me for the past 8+ months so that I can have the healthiest pregnancy possible. The atmosphere is competitive, but in a “be competitive with yourself” kind of way. It’s not in your face; it’s a daily challenge to do better today than you did yesterday. As a former DI athlete (softball) I love that I have a place where I feel like an athlete again.

Something we don’t know about you: My senior year of high school I won the New York State Sportsmanship Award, the Most Valuable Player Award for the Western Regionals, and Section V Player of the Year. I can recite just about every line of Star Wars, Episodes IV-VI (the originals) verbatim.
Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Show up, listen to your coaches, and do your best!  Our coaches truly are THE BEST. They each have their own style and strengths, and they all know their stuff inside and out. They are going to get you to focus on the fundamentals of the movements, correct you when needed, and push you to help you push yourself do more than you thought you could. They will modify movements to deal with injuries, etc. Also, don’t be afraid to push yourself. Go to different classes, try Endurance (it’s actually a lot of fun!). I would add that each day is different and not to get discouraged if one day you get a workout RX and the next you have to do lots of modifications for an L1.
