Athlete of the Month

Members of Inspiration: August 2025

Name: Brett Smith
Age: 45
How long you have been a member at CFSC: Almost a year.

How you got started at CFSC: Would periodically drop into classes here and there with my brother at other CrossFit studios, but researched CFSC for a year or so before I signed up seriously.

Favorite CrossFit movement: Kipping/toes to bars – still in progress, but closer every time.

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Burpees. I’m afraid I’m just not a fan.

Favorite healthy food/meal: Grilled mixed veggies

Favorite part about CFSC: The best part for me is the people, both coaches and other members.  They push you, support you, and make the grind worth it.

Something we don’t know about you: Even though I was in a competitive jump roping group in elementary school, I’ve yet to get the hang of double-unders.

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Try it.  And just keep coming back.  There is always the option to go at your own pace and just get the movement in while challenging yourself.

Name: Lekha

Age: 28

How long you have been a member at CFSC: My CrossFit journey started here at CFSC in August 2021 but I moved cities in a month and used to drop in whenever I was in town. Been a regular since April 2024.

How you got started at CFSC: I wasn’t doing any kind of workout at that point. Then I got influenced by a content creator who did CrossFit. Found the closest CrossFit box and really enjoyed the class format.

Favorite CrossFit movement: Deadlifts and Back squats

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Lunges. My knees don’t enjoy them at all. And wallballs.

Favorite healthy food/meal: My recent favorite has been scrambled eggs with sautéed mushrooms, tomatoes and kale with sourdough bread for breakfast.

Favorite part about CFSC: The community. The coaches and everyone I meet and interact with in the classes are so warm and motivating. I don’t know if I could have come back to CrossFit this soon from my injury if not for the coaches’ support.

Something we don’t know about you: I was a high school athlete back in India. I have medaled at City and State level Handball and District level track events – 100m run and hurdles. I went on to participate at the National level Handball in my 11th grade which was my last major tournament before engineering life took over.

Now I work in a very interesting field of AI where I study and develop audio and speech algorithms. At my last job, I researched and developed a real-time Gunshot Detection System for schools to enable the quickest response in case of emergency.

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: It’s always difficult to start something new but keep showing up and eventually you start liking most of the workouts. Some days may feel easier than others, but it always feels good walking out of the gym after a class, no matter what.
