Members of Inspiration – July 2022

Name: Patrick Byrne
Age: 46
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 2 years How you got started at CFSC: So many friends I’ve known for years belong to this gym: Ryan & Julie Zickos, Jon and Holly Hayes and of course Dan Martinez. When I joined, my job was terrible, my stress level was ridiculous and I was depressed (although I didn’t realize it at the time). It’s not an exaggeration to say CrossFit pulled me out of a very dark time in my life and I haven’t looked back.

Favorite CrossFit movement: Any type of pull up (and whenever Coach Dan isn’t yelling at me to “push harder” and “keep it above 250)!”

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Overhead Squats, nope, hate ‘em.

Favorite healthy food/meal: Skinless chicken cooked on a Weber charcoal grill (yes there’s a difference) with a side of tomato/cucumber salad.

Favorite part about CFSC: I didn’t realize it for almost a year because I was freaking out so much about getting all the movements correct, but it’s so relaxed. Everyone is incredibly nice, accommodating and positive. The 6am class has become like family. I actually look forward to working out and starting my day by challenging myself.

Something we don’t know about you: If I’m on a road trip and within 10 miles of a college campus, I’ll make whoever I’m with stop so we can take a tour. If the bookstore is open, I’ll buy a random shirt, normally for the cross country team since they get no love.

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: We’re not all going to look like fitness models but you will be able to carry 2 bags of mulch under your arm, mow your lawn without getting winded and carry your kids up some stairs. Functional fitness is the real deal, drink the Kool Aid, it goes down smooth.

Oh, and you’re gonna feel like you’re dying after pretty much every workout. Too far? Did I lose you?
