Name: Karen Brown
Age: a few weeks shy of 55
How long you have been a member at CFSC: Around 2 years
How you got started at CFSC: Our friend, Jose Garcia, recommended CFSC after our CF gym shut their door.
Favorite CrossFit movement: squatting even though I get corrected often to squat lower.
Least favorite CrossFit movement: rope climbs.
Favorite healthy food/meal: a protein bowl
Favorite part about CFSC: The coaching staff is outstanding. K.C. and I have been doing CF for 15 years and have been to many gyms. CFSC coaching definitely stands out.
Something we don’t know about you: I converted to a new genre of music through CF. I went from a Grateful Dead fan to an EDM loving girl.
Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Be consistent in your attendance and you should make big improvements.
Name: K.C. Brown
Age: Significantly older than Karen
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 2 years, I think
How you got started at CFSC CrossFit:
15ish years ago…
Karen: “You should come with me to CrossFit.”
Me: “I don’t like gyms.”
Karen: “It’s in an industrial garage. They don’t have machines. It’s like a playground for big kids — just monkey bars, weights, tractor tires, ropes, and sandbags. There are no mirrors and people don’t get dressed up in ‘outfits’ or specialty clothes.”
Me: “Sounds fun.”
Favorite CrossFit movement: Anything horrible and full body — burpees, thrusters, man-makers, squat cleans, Turkish get-ups, sled pushes, and (nostalgically) sandbag get-ups
Least favorite CrossFit movement: Deadlift
Favorite healthy food/meal: Whatever Karen cooks
Favorite part about CFSC: Coaching Quality
Something we don’t know about you: I sometimes make loud noises when I lift heavy things (at least heavy to me)
Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Show, shut up, and do what you are told… but in a way you can still come back tomorrow.
