Athlete of the Month

Members of Inspiration: June 2025

Name: Courtney Forry
Age: 27
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 4 years

How you got started at CFSC: I was moving to the area from Connecticut, and was looking for a new place to do CrossFit.

Favorite CrossFit movement: Anything that is barbell lifting, I don’t discriminate.

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Burpees… hands-down

Favorite healthy food/meal: Depends on the day, right now I have been into a ground chicken taco bowl with avocado.

Favorite part about CFSC: The community. No matter what kind of day you’re having, the people are all supportive and they will make it better.

Something we don’t know about you: I grew up in “Amish country” Pennsylvania. I played lacrosse in college. And I am a dental hygienist.

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Just keep showing up. You may not be able to do everything that is planned, but you will get better one day at a time.

Name: Chuck Elliott
Age: 46
How long you have been a member at CFSC: Over 10 years.

How you got started at CFSC: I moved to Charlotte from Rochester NY and was looking for a CrossFit gym that matched the community of the last CrossFit gym we were at. I tried many different CrossFit gyms. We went with Steele Creek because of the family feel that we were used to. That’s what I try to reproduce to this day. You can meet some of your best friends while dying in a workout. Together. Always cheer on everyone!
We have met some of our best friends and amazing people here because of this gym.

Favorite CrossFit movement: Power Cleans or stealing Courtney’s lane 😉

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Overhead squats. I had shoulder surgery last year (NOT because of CrossFit), but I’ve always hated them. I hope to be able to do them again, but if not, I’m okay with that.

Favorite healthy food/meal: Does Brisket count? I can even smoke a Paleo brisket.  I think Brian and others might agree about my brisket? I’ve been known to smoke some pretty okay bbq. Of course, I always enjoy trying different types of bbq. I really enjoy a great steak or salmon cooked over charcoal. I may even have a few awards for it ;).

Favorite part about CFSC: Hands down the people. Even in the roughest days lately, it’s been wonderful going to the 5:30 class and leaving in such a better spot. Ryan (Zeke), Courtney, Holly, Jon, Ed, Nick, and others including the coaches make it entertaining and fun. All the evening people help make the end of the day better. Jason has been a great friend and bbq teammate. I never would have met him if not for CrossFit Steele Creek. I wish him and Steph the best with the new baby. Something we don’t know about you: Jamie started crossfit 2 years before me. She bugged me for those entire 2 years to try it. I was not interested. I was already working 70-80+ hours a week and didn’t think I had time. I was already running a ton of road and trail miles at the time.
Once I finally gave it a try, I was hooked. I kept working the same hours, running the same distances, and fitting in crossfit. It was the sense of community that kept me coming back. Along with pushing myself with different movements and workouts. I’m still forever trying to beat her PR in Annie. It’s both our favorite wod and the only one she can beat me in. I think I can get her now though, even though it will be close

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Try it and see. If people don’t introduce themselves, go and introduce yourself. Then give them crap (burpees) for not doing it first 😛. Also, don’t be afraid of scaling. I remember a great quote I saw when I was starting CrossFit: “You’re still lapping everyone on the couch”.
