Members of Inspiration – March 2020

Name: Holly Hayes
Age: 44
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 1 ½ yrs

How you got started at CFSC: I had been doing CrossFit for a few years and moved around to different places. I was at a box in Seattle for work assignment and when I came back to Charlotte, I joined CFSC because Jon, Zeke and Julie were members here.

Favorite CrossFit movement: Dare I say….the assault bike. It’s a love/hate thing.

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Thrusters (because Burpees are a given)

Favorite healthy food/meal: This was the hardest question because I LOVE food. I’ll go with the BYO Salad bowl at YAFO. So many toppings and tasty goodness.

Favorite part about CFSC: The amazing stereo system. Ok, no. It’s the people! The coaches and the other athletes are fantastic. There is a reason I drive 25 minutes each way to this place.

Something we don’t know about you: No, I’ve never played basketball. My high school coach begged me to try out in 9th grade. I went to 2 practices and he said “Yeah, I don’t think this is for you.”

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Just show up. Some of the technical aspects can be intimidating, but when you do something you’ve never done before or hit a PR it’s amazing. It took me over a year to remember the difference between a clean and a snatch. Be patient. It will start to fall into place.

Name: Jon Hayes
Age: 43
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 2 years

How you got started at CFSC: My office switched from uptown to Ballantyne and I needed to find a new gym. I had a few friends (Rev. Zeke) that were members of CFSC and after one visit I knew it was the right place!

Favorite CrossFit movement: Front squats are my jam.

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Muscle ups and shoulder intensive moves. Also, any movement that requires me to “lock out my arms” :).

Favorite healthy food/meal: Avocados stuffed with quinoa and chicken.

Favorite part about CFSC: Hands down, it’s the members and coaches.  I’ve been a member of three other gyms in Charlotte and I can honestly say CFSC is different.  The environment makes me want to be a better version of myself and I’m fortunate and inspired to be around such a great group of folks.  It’s my favorite part of the day…except when there are assault bikes in the WOD and Holly crushes me.

Something we don’t know about you: Holly and I got married in our backyard.  Zeke stepped up to the plate, became an ordained minister online, and married us.  I’m still not sure if it’s legit.  I’m also an amateur horologist who loves Halloween, vintage cars, scotch and anything mechanical.  I’m originally from Alabama, 78.5% leprechaun, and used my magical powers to get a tall hot blonde from Los Angeles to marry me.  I have her convinced that I’m 6’2”, built like a cross between Chuy, Kevin and Burt, and once killed a lion with my bare hands.

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it:
Don’t be afraid and don’t believe the haters. Just show up, work hard, be smart about it, and you will be better every day.
