Members of Inspiration – September

Name: Jamie Shepherd
Age: 40 (sometimes that is hard to Type 😊)
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 11 months. I joined in October of 2018, right after moving to Charlotte from Columbus, Ohio. I actually did a drop-in the first week we moved here, and I was immediately hooked

How you got started at CFSC: I first joined Crossfit in Columbus in January of 2017.  I was in a funk of the same old gym routine and attempting to push myself at a regular gym.  It wasn’t working for me anymore, so I finally took a plunge and tried something out of my comfort zone. Then when I moved to Charlotte, I found out that CFSC was the closest gym to my house and from day one I felt welcomed. I can honestly say that CFSC has helped me adjust to my new home & town and it is my daily sanctuary. Everything I have going on with work/family/etc. goes out the window when I am there, and it truly is my “happy place”.

Favorite CrossFit movement: I would say I have become very fond of Power Cleans.  When I joined CFSC I feel like these looked and felt terrible and my 1 rep was maybe 95.  I’ve gained a lot of amazing tips from our coaches and I think I am around 125+ now so the strength piece has improved a lot.

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Overhead squats. Of any movement, these still seem to be the toughest for me. However, I used to avoid them. Now I get my butt in there and at least work on only form with light weight to improve whatever I can.

Favorite healthy food/meal: Basically, anything on the grill. I love grilled chicken or a good filet with roasted brussels/veggies.

Favorite part about CFSC: Can EVERYTHING be an answer?  So, I was back in Columbus this past week for work and went to a gym there with some of my old workout buddies.  One of the things I reflected upon after listening to the coach explain the workout was that our coaches are TRULY AMAZING at CFSC. The Coach there was a little unorganized, had no board for reference, didn’t have everyone’s attention, and just didn’t seem to have the knowledge that EVERY Coach does at CFSC. I have gained so much more from one on one tips/encouragement/coaching in the past 11 months then I ever did while in Ohio. This includes Nutrition as well.
I also love all of the wonderful people that I have met since I started here. There is never a time that I feel intimidated in a class and this keeps me excited and ready for the next day and workout.  You all are Awesome!

Something we don’t know about you: I played college softball and then coached high school softball for 8 years after college.  I loved teaching and training new athletes and it was always a passion of mine.  Also my girlfriend Anna & I have 5 dogs. So, if anyone ever needs a dog fix or knows a good in home doggie sitter we are always looking for one, especially over the Holidays 😊

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: In the words of Nike, Just Do It.  It was one of the best decisions I have ever made.  It has helped me in so many ways to better my life and continues to so on a daily basis.

Name: Matt Torres
Age: 41
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 2yrs 8months

How you got started at CFSC: I work with Erik Hauck.  I needed to start moving and he suggested CFSC

Favorite CrossFit movement: Deadlift, strict press, and back squat

Least favorite CrossFit movement: Burpees and any body weight movements

Favorite healthy food/meal: Does beer and wings count?

Favorite part about CFSC: It’s the same answer most everyone gives: the people and coaches. If it were not for both of those, I would have quit a long time ago.

Something we don’t know about you: I have 4 grandkids. They are great (in small doses). I like them way better than my own kids. I can return them after a few hours and have silence again. Also the people in the 6am class nicknamed me stormcloud. Probably because of my sunny disposition.

Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Attend often, pay attention. Do not expect results overnight because it will take hard work and dedication.
Have fun! If you are not having fun, you are more likely to quit.
