November 2017- Members of Inspiration

Name: Kelly Van Sickle
Age: 40
How long you have been a member at CFSC:  6 years
How you got started at CFSC:  I dated a garage CrossFitter 7 years ago.  He had a pretty big ego and told me it would be too hard for me.  I was pretty determined to prove him wrong.  Needless to say that relationship didn’t last long lol.
Favorite CrossFit movement:  Flag football  😉  HSPU’s, kettlebells, rope climbs, double unders, running…any lift with “hang, power or push” in front of it.
Least favorite CrossFit movement:  Anything with a squat.  Which is like, a lot of them.
Favorite healthy food/meal:  Grilled chicken, cauliflower mash and sautéed veggies.  Wine counts too, right?!
Favorite part about CFSC:The 9amers!  I love that I found a gym where we can laugh, be silly, have a great time and still get some serious work done.  Also, the coaches.  They know their stuff. They get to know you well and they know when and how to push you.  I also love how welcoming and encouraging everyone is.  My first day I saw all these girls (I remember Sunny was one of them) run over and hug someone who came through the door and I was like “who the hell hugs someone because they’ve been out of the gym a few weeks?” I get it now and I have become a hugger.
Something we don’t know about you: I started 2 businesses that I’ve been running for 13 years: a mineral import/export business and a refractory processing plant I built on the US/Mex border.  I also work as Port Captain in New Orleans and Brownsville, TX.  I’m obsessed with knitting and I play the piano.
Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it:  Don’t be afraid to get started. I never worked out before I found CrossFit.  I ran a bunch and took some Pilates, but I never touched a barbell before in my life or lifted anything over 10 pounds.  Also set all kinds of goals for yourself: big ones, little ones, anything you can think of.  Share these goals and work with others to reach them.  There’s always someone willing to put in extra work with you if you reach out and ask. Take full advantage of the amazing community we have.

Name: Burton Steele
Age: 40
How long you have been a member at CFSC: 1.5 years
How you got started at CFSC: Coworkers and friends kept pestering me to come; I was unmotivated going to my regular gym, so I decided to check it out. This Jewish guy took my bank account info and started charging me so I figured I should keep coming.
Favorite CrossFit movement: Making sweat angels after every WOD. Close second would be split jerks.
Least favorite CrossFit movement: Ugh… overhead squats, without a doubt. Just not natural.
Favorite healthy food/meal: Chicken and sweet potatoes.
Favorite part about CFSC: Everyone always say “the people” but it’s not, it’s the whole experience: the amazing people you would do anything for, how you feel after getting a 5lb PR, the elation you feel for your CF fam when they finally “get it” with a movement, the lazy days hanging out together on someone’s boat… it’s the way you feel about your life as a whole after that cup of Kool-Aid.
Something we don’t know about you: I lived in Alaska for a few years. I spent 2 years learning to track, hunt, fish in the wild, snowboard, sleep in complete sunlight at midnight, and hate snow.
Words of wisdom for people who are new to CrossFit or interested in trying it: Be open minded. Trust your coaches, trust yourself, listen to your body, and communicate. When you feel scared or lazy, just get in the door. From there, we’ll get you through the next hour.
